On the October 2012 Truants Marrakesh Bike Ride Rod approached fellow Truant, Rock God and (at that time) Metal Hammer Editor Alex Milas about joining him in starting a new Charity Ride called Heavy Metal Truants in the following year, 2013, the idea being to persuade a team from the Metal community to cycle from London to the prime UK Metal Festival, Download, at Castle Donington. Cycling around 170 miles over tough terrain in 2 days and a morning the intention, was to arrive just in time for the start of the Festival at midday. Alex took up the challenge and Metal fans, bands and music biz luminaries were signed up to undertake the challenge, which around 35 gleefully did and £94,000 was raised in this inaugural year.

Following this first success the Heavy Metal Truants Bike Ride, London to Download, has become an annual event with more riders signing up and more money raised, a magnificent total of £338,000 over the 4 annual rides to date.

The fifth HM Truants Ride took place on June 8 to 10 2017 and was succesfully completed by all riders! Updated total to come.

The funds are raised to be shared equally between the Truants adopted Children’s Charities, – Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy, Teenage Cancer Trust and ChildLine/NSPCC
